What a P60 shows and when you get it
A P60 shows the tax you have paid on your salary in the tax year, which runs from 6 April to 5 April. You get a separate P60 for each of your jobs every tax year.
If you are working for an employer on 5 April, they must give you a P60 by 31 May. It can be on paper or electronic, so check your employer's payroll portal or email as well as your post.
P60 or P45?
| Your situation | Which form |
|---|---|
| Still working for the employer on 5 April | A P60 for that job, by 31 May. |
| You left the job before the end of the tax year | A P45 when you leave, not a P60 from that employer. |
| More than one job at the end of the tax year | A separate P60 from each employer. |
What you might need it for
GOV.UK gives examples: claiming back tax you have overpaid, and proving your income when you apply for a loan or a mortgage.
If a lender or other organisation asks for a P60 and you only have the online figures, ask them what they will accept. This guide does not say whether any organisation accepts an alternative.
Lost your P60?
The online routes show the information, not a duplicate of the employer's form. Signing in to your personal tax account may ask you to prove your identity, normally with photo ID such as a passport or driving licence.
- Ask your employer for a replacement P60.
- If you cannot get one from your employer, use your personal tax account or the HMRC app to find the information that would be on the P60.
- Or contact HMRC and ask for the information that would be on the P60.
Contacting HMRC about Income Tax
The helpline may ask security questions. GOV.UK suggests making sure your personal details and address are up to date in your personal tax account beforehand.

Need several years of records?
Your personal tax account shows a record of your current and past 5 years' employment, under your Pay As You Earn (PAYE) Income Tax records. For a record from earlier years, GOV.UK has a paper application form to send to HMRC.
Common questions
When should I get my P60?
If you are working for the employer on 5 April, they must give it to you by 31 May, on paper or electronically.
I left my job during the year. Will I get a P60 from that employer?
GOV.UK says you get a P60 if you are working for the employer at the end of the tax year, and a P45 if you stop working for them.
Can HMRC send me a new P60?
GOV.UK says to ask your employer for a replacement. If that is not possible, you can find the information that would be on the P60 online, or ask HMRC for that information.
